Ahead to All-year housing

Outwintered animals

116. Only a very small minority of milking animals in the UK are outwintered, being brought in for milking twice daily. In extreme conditions supplementary feed must be provided in the field. It is not, however, uncommon for heifers and dry cows to be outwintered, although damage to pastures can occur and cattle can be uncomfortable, particularly in high rainfall areas.

Recommendations

117. If cows are turned out during part, or all, of the winter period they should be allowed to acclimatise to the conditions.

118. A concrete standing area or well-drained, suitable surface that will not injure feet should be provided around feed and water troughs. Alternatively, these facilities should be moved frequently to prevent animals standing in muddy, foul areas.

119. Cattle should be provided with shelter, which may be natural, from wind and driving rain.
