126. Low level lighting is beneficial in buildings at night so cows can see their way around lying, feeding and loafing areas. Artificially increasing day- length has been shown to increase milk output. Improvements reported in reproductive performance may be the result of better conditions for observation. There are no benefits from provision of 24 hours of light, as cows need a period of reduced light intensity in order to rest. There is uncertainty about the optimum length of this period and research would therefore be beneficial.
127. Lighting patterns and intensity should be of a type which encourage cows to feed and perform their normal behaviour.
128. Adequate lighting should be available to allow proper inspection of stock.
129. Further research is needed to determine the optimum light:dark ratio and intensity of light in order to maintain good welfare.
