289. Following a request from Government, the Council provided advice in 1996 on the use of per rectum ultrasound pregnancy detection in cattle. The main recommendation arising from this study was that non-veterinarians should only be allowed to carry out pregnancy detection in cattle by per rectum scanning after undergoing training in the technique and having reached a recognised standard. Our advice to MAFF is at Appendix C. The Agriculture Departments are presently considering a possible change to the law.
