Lameness

102. During its visits the working group did not find that lameness was a major problem although foot lesions were fairly common. The prevalence of lameness depends on the season and the type and condition of the land in use. Wet ground, particularly that containing sharp stones, may lead to severe damage to the feet. Land which is badly poached and then baked dry in summer or frozen in winter can also cause problems. Advice about lameness may be found in a free MAFF booklet Lameness in Pigs which is available from MAFF Publications, London SE99 7TP (tel: 0645 556000) - quote ref PB 1148. Where necessary veterinary advice should also be sought.
