Culling and slaughter on-farm

115. This study has not covered slaughter at the abattoir or processing plant but it has considered culling and slaughter of birds on-farm. Turkeys are culled for a variety of reasons, e.g. to remove sick or injured birds or to thin the flock, although in the latter case it is usual for large producers to transport the turkeys to the slaughterhouse and not to kill on-farm. Most farm slaughter, at market weight, takes place on smaller farms producing for the seasonal market. In all cases the law requires that the birds are killed in a humane manner.
