Ahead to Part IV: Summary of recommendations

Farm Fires

140. Records indicate that there are relatively few fires in turkey houses but should one occur it is likely that many birds will die because of the numbers involved. The risk of fire in wooden framed buildings is considerable and whilst systems are being developed which may help to control the spread of fire, vigilance and good maintenance are the best precautions. For example, it is essential that brooders are maintained in good order and that electrical installations are properly fitted and protected to avoid the possibility of damage. It is also a sensible precaution to store inflammable bedding away from the houses. We suggest that all producers take advice of their local fire prevention officer in order to reduce the risk of fire.
