If turkeys are kept in continuous light or too short a dark period, harmful eye problems occur. When a period of darkness is provided, a normal cycle of resting and activity can develop and this has been shown to improve leg health. High activity can be associated with increased injurious behaviour so studies of ways of changing photoperiods during development have been carried out.
