1. One bird per catcher should be caught under normal circumstances. If there is a lot of walking (e.g. shed clearance), then two birds per person may be caught, but someone must load one bird at a time into the top and middle crates.
2. All birds to be caught, carried and loaded by two legs.
3. Always load the top drawer first.
4. Birds should be loaded as per the number on the catching schedule.
5. When loading, one hand should hold the bird by the legs, with the other hand supporting the breast. On no account should birds be held by the wing or neck.
6. The birds must be placed carefully in the module drawer, under no circumstances should a bird be dropped or thrown into the drawers.
7. The whole operation should be carried out in such a manner as to safeguard the safety of personnel and stock.
8. If the birds crowd and will not spread out while catching, then catching must stop. The lights must be turned up and the birds spread out, then left a short time to settle before catching commences.
9. As each drawer is filled, it must be closed carefully to ensure the birds' extremeties are not trapped in any way.
10. Full modules should be taken out of the shed slowly, and care must be taken to ensure there is no (unnecessary) damage caused to the birds.
11. At the completion of the catching operation, a catching questionnaire should be completed by the farm manager and foreman, and then signed by both. Copies should be distributed as directed on the form.
